Welcome to Sikh Mission of Virginia ("SMV"), a faith based 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization dedicated to the advancement of Human Race and Sikhi way of life. We have been serving the growing communities of Herndon, Ashburn, Dulles, Sterling, Leesburg, Reston, South Riding and surrounding areas of Washington Metro in the National capital. Our community outreach programs and youth initiatives are designed to help those in need, and create future global leaders. We do not require that you belong to any particular religious affiliation or financially support our organization in any way, however, donations are always welcome. We do ask that you return one good deed with another and perform an act of kindness to another. This way, the cycle of love, compassion and goodwill continues indefinitely.
Nanakshahi Calendar
Wishing everyone around the world, a very Happy New Year. 1 Chet (equates to March 14 according to Julien Calendar) is the New Year celebrated by the Sikhs and others according to the Nanakshahi Calendar. It is the beginning of Nankshahi 531. To understand and find out more about the Nanakshahi calendar, please review the following links:

Some of the features of Nanakshahi calendar are: tropical solar calendar, year one is the year of Guru Nanak Birth (CE 1469, 2010 CE is Nanashahi 541), length of year is the same as western calendar, and much more. Until Nanakshahi Calendar was introduced, Nanakshahi Sampat was used that is linked to Bikrami Sampat. The challenges with Bikrami Sampat are explained in the link above leading to the creation of Nanakshahi Calendar.

Hukamnama (His Holy Word or Message of the Day)
Hukamnama is delivered during Sikh Mission of Virginia congragation from Sri Guru Granth Sahib, holy scriptures/book of the Sikhs and all humanity. The objective of sharing the Hukamnama or Message of Lord for the Day with the world is to encourage everyone, irresepctive of religion, caste, creed, gender, race, age or color, to treat human race as one, respect nature (His Order/Command) and enlighten minds to gain elevation to a higher self.
Hukamnama are archived here to allow all website visitors, guests, researchers, congregation (Sadh Sangat) and staff of Sikh Mission of Virginia, to read and gain better understanding on how to live a positive enriched life and love humanity and all of God's creation. Click here to read more..
